A Giant of the Insect World
Goliath beetles are African scarabs renowned for their size and striking form. Some mature males of Goliathus goliatus exceed four inches in length, placing them among the largest insects. Their characteristic forked head horn is used in contests with other males over feeding sites and mating opportunities.
Like other beetles, they pass through larval and pupal stages before emerging as adults. Their changing diet and activity help recycle nutrients in their tropical habitats. This remarkable natural subject lends itself to a silver design that rewards a closer look at the body, legs and wing detail.
Obverse Design
The Goliathus beetle appears with its wings extended over a deep, domed radial burst. Micro-engraved textures distinguish the body from the fine lines of the background, emphasizing the insect’s sculptural form. Reverse Design
The Intaglio Mint logo rises in ultra-high relief over a matching radial burst. A stippled outer border identifies the contents with “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER,” separated by lightning bolts. The shared background and border treatment tie the two faces together.
