The Beetle Behind the Design
Stag beetles belong to the family Lucanidae. Their familiar name comes from the enlarged jaws, or mandibles, of many males, which resemble a stag’s antlers. These impressive structures are used in contests between males, making the head one of the insect’s most distinctive features.
Much of a stag beetle’s life can pass out of sight as a larva feeding on decaying wood. The European stag beetle, for example, spends years in this stage before its relatively brief adult life. By breaking down dead wood, these insects contribute to the recycling of nutrients in woodland habitats. The adult’s dramatic appearance is only one part of that natural story.
Obverse Design
A stag beetle spreads its wings over a deep, domed radial burst. Its prominent jaws, lifted wing covers and segmented body form the central composition, with fine textures providing contrast against the radiating background. A stippled border reads “ALL HAIL THE SILVER BUG” above and “IN SILVER WE TRUST” below.
Reverse Design
The Intaglio Mint logo appears in ultra-high relief over a matching radial burst. The stippled border carries “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER,” with lightning bolts separating the inscriptions. This shared reverse connects the insect design to the wider Silver Bug series.
