Giant Longhorn Beetle – 2 oz Silver Round
Intaglio Mint’s Giant Longhorn Beetle brings one of nature’s most imposing insects to the Silver Bug series. Struck in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, this 39mm art medal combines an ultra-high-relief beetle with a deep-domed radial background. Its approximately 6mm thickness gives the compact round a substantial feel, while micro-engraved details invite a closer look at the insect’s intricate form.
A Giant with Remarkable Jaws
Macrodontia cervicornis, also known as the giant sawyer beetle, inhabits parts of South America, including the Amazon basin. The males’ enormous, serrated jaws are among its most striking features. Guinness World Records documents a specimen collected in Peru in 2007 measuring 17.7cm including those jaws—an important distinction when comparing the sizes of different beetles.
The name Macrodontia means “long tooth.” The Insect Museum of West China notes that, despite belonging to the longhorn beetles, this species has comparatively short antennae. That combination of outsized jaws and intricate body structure makes it a compelling subject for relief sculpture, translating the insect’s unusual proportions into a design that rewards close inspection.
Obverse Design
The beetle appears with wings extended and wing covers opened, revealing its segmented body beneath. Long jaws rise above the head, while fine details distinguish the legs and wing surfaces. A deep-domed radial burst frames the ultra-high-relief insect, and the stippled outer border carries “ALL HAIL THE SILVERBUG” above and “IN SILVER WE TRUST” below.
Reverse Design
The ultra-high-relief Intaglio Mint logo stands at the center of a radial burst. A stippled border displays “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER,” with lightning bolts separating the inscriptions.
