The Four Seasons – Winter in Quiet Reflection

Winter closes Intaglio Mint’s Four Seasons sequence with a quieter, more inward-looking image. A young woman wrapped in heavy drapery stands against a barren background, offering a strong contrast to the flowers and movement of the warmer seasons. Inspired by Edoardo Gioja’s art, the round contains 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver in a 39 mm format.

From Painting to Silver

Italian artist Edoardo Gioja (1862–1937) worked in portraiture, landscape and decorative art. His Four Seasons appeared in The Studio in 1901. Italy’s ICCD preserves photographs of the seasonal paintings and drawings, providing a record of this part of his work.

Recognizing Winter Without Snow

Seasonal allegories do not always require a literal landscape. A figure’s clothing, posture and surroundings can communicate the time of year. The National Gallery of Victoria notes that traditional Winter figures may carry a brazier, suggesting the need for warmth. This design expresses that need through its heavy covering and restrained setting.

The absence of the other seasons’ abundance becomes part of the image. There are no gathered flowers or harvest to dominate the scene; attention rests on the draped figure and her melancholy mood. Viewed beside the other rounds, Winter brings the cycle to a pause, inviting reflection on the interval before growth returns.

Design Details

The obverse portrays a young maiden enveloped in a heavy shroud against an empty, barren background. The fabric gives the composition visual weight, while the simpler surroundings place emphasis on the figure. Its reserved character makes Winter a distinctive counterpart to the more animated Spring, Summer and Autumn designs.

The reverse features the large Intaglio Mint logo inside a plain border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” appears above, “.999 FINE SILVER” below, and stars flank the inscriptions. The shared reverse holds the series together as its obverses explore the changing character of the year.
