Continental Dollar Tribute – 2 oz Silver Round
The sun and sundial on one side, thirteen linked colonies on the other: few designs express the Revolutionary era so directly. Intaglio Mint’s Continental Dollar tribute brings this historic imagery to two troy ounces of .999 fine silver. Its compact 39mm diameter and approximately 6mm thickness give the round a pronounced, substantial feel.
Revolutionary Imagery, an Intriguing History
The pieces traditionally called Continental dollars bear the date 1776, but their origins are more complicated than that date suggests. Colonial Williamsburg catalogs examples as commemorative medals produced around 1783, possibly in London. Their designs borrow from fractional Continental Currency bills issued on February 17, 1776. The familiar name survives even as research has challenged the older account of a dollar coin struck by Congress in 1776.
That history makes the design especially interesting to collectors: imagery created for Revolutionary paper money found a second life in metal. The sundial and FUGIO remind the viewer that time passes, while MIND YOUR BUSINESS urges attention to the task at hand. The linked colonies and WE ARE ONE turn the message outward, presenting cooperation as a source of strength.
Obverse Design
CONTINENTAL CURRENCY and 1776 frame an inner scene of the sun shining over a sundial. FUGIO and MIND YOUR BUSINESS accompany the image, with a detailed border around the rim. The historic date is retained as part of the tribute artwork.
Reverse Design
The original thirteen colonies appear within linked rings surrounding AMERICAN CONGRESS and the central motto WE ARE ONE. The modern 2ozt. .999 Silver hallmark is placed within the lower links. This is a modern silver art round, distinct from the historic pieces whose imagery it celebrates.
