Raphael’s best-known biblical appearance is in the Book of Tobit. Disguised as a human companion, he accompanies Tobit’s son Tobias, also called Tobiah, on a journey. His help reaches beyond safe passage: within the narrative, he guides the young man through danger, aids Sarah, and provides the means by which Tobit’s blindness is healed.

The fish associated with Raphael comes directly from this story. At the Tigris, Tobias catches a fish and follows his companion’s instructions to preserve parts of it, which later play a role in healing and deliverance. Raphael eventually reveals his identity, transforming what appeared to be an ordinary journey into a story of providence and care.

Artists repeatedly returned to the subject. Renaissance paintings of Tobias and the angel turned the traveling pair and their fish into recognizable symbols of protection and guidance. Those associations give this modern silver interpretation meaning beyond the figure’s dramatic pose.
