Accomplished medallist Hermon Atkins MacNeil designed this award medal for the Pan American Exposition, a world’s fair held in Buffalo, New York, in 1901. The obverse features Liberty walking alongside a bison; the reverse depicts two native Americans, one representing South America (at left, cross legged) and the other depicting North America (at right, seated) sharing a peace pipe to symbolize Pan-American friendship.
