Lady Bug – 2 oz Silver Round

Intaglio Mint’s Lady Bug turns a familiar little insect into a substantial work of silver art. Inspired by Coccinella magnifica, the design presents the beetle in ultra-high relief with micro-engraved details and a deep-domed radial background. Two troy ounces of .999 fine silver are concentrated in a 39mm round approximately 6mm thick, giving this Silver Bug release a satisfying weight and sculptural presence.

A Small Beetle with an Unusual Neighbor

Coccinella magnifica is known as the scarce seven-spot ladybird. It belongs to the ladybird beetle family, Coccinellidae, and measures only about 6–8mm long in nature. Its rounded form and spotted wing covers may look familiar, but this species has a distinctive association with wood ants.

UK Beetle Recording describes it living close to wood-ant nests in woodland and heathland, rather than inside the nests themselves. It feeds on aphids and is often recorded on Scots pine. Naturalists distinguish it from the more familiar seven-spot ladybird partly by its more domed shape and small white markings on the underside. That hidden complexity makes this tiny subject a fitting invitation to look more closely at the natural world.

Obverse Design

The ladybug is shown from above with rounded, closed wing covers, engraved spots and delicate legs extending from its body. Ultra-high relief emphasizes the domed silhouette, while micro-engraved textures distinguish the smaller details. A deep-domed radial burst surrounds the insect, framed by a stippled border with “ALL HAIL THE SILVERBUG” above and “IN SILVER WE TRUST” below.

Reverse Design

The ultra-high-relief Intaglio Mint logo rises from a radial burst. Its stippled border carries “TWO TROY OUNCES” above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below, separated by lightning bolts. The repeating radial treatment connects both sides of the medal.
