Rhinoceros Beetle – 2 oz Silver Round

A bold horn, rounded wing covers and finely articulated legs make the Rhinoceros Beetle a natural subject for Intaglio Mint’s Silver Bug series. Micro-engraved details and an approximately 6mm-thick profile give the medal both visual depth and a substantial feel.

Nature’s Horned Beetles

Rhinoceros beetles belong to the group known as Dynastinae, a branch of the scarab beetle family. The name refers to the prominent horns that make many males so distinctive. These structures are more than decoration: in species such as the Hercules beetle, males use their horns in contests for access to females.

This group includes some of the insect world’s impressive giants. The Natural History Museum describes Hercules beetles with long, plier-like horns and the heavy-bodied Megasoma rhinoceros beetles of Central and South America. Their varied shapes illustrate how much diversity can exist within one beetle group. This medal celebrates that sculptural character without assigning the artwork to a particular species.

Obverse Design

The beetle is viewed from above, with closed wing covers, legs extending to either side and a pronounced horn projecting toward the upper rim. Smooth, rounded surfaces contrast with the fine textures of the legs and surrounding field. A deep-domed radial burst radiates behind the ultra-high-relief subject, bordered by a stippled ring bearing “ALL HAIL THE SILVERBUG” above and “IN SILVER WE TRUST” below.

Reverse Design

The ultra-high-relief Intaglio Mint logo is centered on a radial burst. The stippled outer border reads “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER,” with lightning bolts separating the inscriptions.
