New Jersey Copper Tribute – 2 oz Silver Round
A horse’s head, a plow, and a shield recall the years when individual states supplied their own small change. Intaglio Mint’s New Jersey Copper Tribute recreates that early American imagery in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. The name refers to the historic copper coin; this modern 39mm tribute is struck in silver.
Small Change for a New State
Under the Articles of Confederation, both the states and the national government could coin money. New Jersey authorized its copper coinage in 1786, joining other states that sought to improve the money available for everyday transactions.
The contract granted Thomas Goadsby, Albion Cox, and Walter Mould authority to produce three million coppers, each weighing 150 grains, with one tenth of the output owed to the state. That arrangement connected a public need for dependable small change with private minting enterprise. The original coins belong to the years before the federal Mint established a national coinage.
Obverse Design
A right-facing horse’s head appears above a plow, surrounded by “NOVA CÆSAREA,” the Latin name used for New Jersey. The depicted date 1786 sits below the plow beam. Triangular dentils frame the design, bringing the agricultural and heraldic imagery into a crisp circular border.
Reverse Design
An American shield fills the center beneath “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” commonly translated as “Out of many, one.” The modern weight and purity inscription, “TWO TROY OUNCES .999 FINE SILVER,” distinguishes the tribute from its copper inspiration. A matching dentil border unites the two sides.
