Morte Prima di Disonore – 2 oz Silver Round
A helmeted skull and a winged skull form a dramatic pair on this 2 troy ounce .999 fine silver round. “Morte Prima di Disonore” expresses the Italian version of “Death Before Dishonor,” a statement about loyalty and courage given sculptural form through swords, ornament, and symbols of mortality.
Honor in the Warrior Tradition
Ancient accounts reveal how closely honor could be tied to conduct in battle. In Germania, Tacitus describes Germanic leaders who were expected to lead by bravery and companions who sought to match them. Returning from a battle in which their leader had fallen carried lasting disgrace.
This is a historical parallel to the sentiment behind the motto, rather than proof that Tacitus used its exact modern wording. The round interprets that theme through symbolic art: a warrior’s helmet, weapons, and the skull’s reminder of mortality. Its imagery connects a familiar martial saying with the visual language of remembrance and resolve.
Obverse Design
A left-facing skull wears an ornate Roman-style helmet with a sweeping crest. A sword enters through the top and emerges through the mouth. Small crosses and scrolling ornaments frame the upper field, while “MORTE PRIMA DI DISONORE” curves around the lower border.
Reverse Design
A winged skull is crossed by three swords entering from below and extending above it. A banner woven through the sword handles carries “DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR.” Decorative crosses and scrolls echo the obverse, with the hallmark arranged along the lower border. The two sides give this edition its distinctive paired-skull composition.
