George Washington – Ready for War
Mounted on his horse, George Washington appears as a commander prepared to meet the demands of the field. Before the Presidency
On June 15, 1775, the Continental Congress selected Washington to command the Continental Army. He traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to take charge of the forces gathered around Boston. The appointment began more than eight years of military leadership through the American struggle for independence.
The mounted figure recalls that responsibility without assigning the artwork to a specific battle. Washington’s work involved sustaining an army as well as directing it: enduring reverses, coordinating campaigns and maintaining a force capable of continuing the struggle. The horse-and-rider composition makes the commander’s readiness the central theme.
His service also had a notable ending. On December 23, 1783, Washington resigned his commission before Congress in Annapolis and returned to private life. That decision places the martial image in a wider historical frame: the command he accepted in wartime was one he voluntarily relinquished when the conflict was over.
Design Details
The obverse depicts Washington atop his horse, ready for war. On the reverse, a spread-winged eagle appears beneath a crown, holding a flowing ribbon in its talons against a diamond-patterned circular field. LIMITED MINTAGE™ and MINT CLUB™ identify the series, with the 500-piece mintage stated below the eagle.
The outer rounded dentil circumference repeats TOTAL MINTAGE 500 above and carries ONE TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER below. This detailed series reverse balances the mounted portrait and makes the issue’s silver content and mintage part of the design itself.
