Mercury Dime Tribute Silver Round – High Relief
Winged Liberty and the freedom of thought.
This high-relief tribute brings the familiar Mercury dime design into one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. Its compact 30mm format presents Winged Liberty on the obverse and the fasces on the reverse, with the 1916 date and D mint-mark motif recalling a celebrated early issue of the original series.
Why “Mercury”?
Adolph A. Weinman designed the Winged Liberty dime, produced from 1916 through 1945. The portrait represents Liberty wearing a winged cap, an expression of freedom of thought. Its resemblance to the Roman messenger god’s winged headwear gave the coin its lasting Mercury nickname.
The original reverse paired a Roman fasces with an olive branch, balancing strength and readiness with a desire for peace. These classical symbols helped make the small circulating coin one of the most recognizable designs of its era.
Design Details
Obverse: Winged Liberty is surrounded by “LIBERTY,” with “IN GOD WE TRUST” below the portrait and the date 1916.
Reverse: The fasces is framed by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DIME” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” A D mint-mark motif complements the date. Microprinting along the axe blade identifies the tribute as “1 Troy Ounce .999 AG.”
A Modern Tribute in Silver
The historic inscriptions are part of the reproduced design. This piece is a privately minted one-ounce silver round, rather than an original 1916 dime. Its weight hallmark identifies the modern silver content while allowing the familiar composition to remain the focus.
