Five strikes using our 50mm, 39mm, 30mm, 20mm and 16mm Mercury Tribute die sets create its distinctive overlapping composition.
Five Strikes, One Medal
The descending portraits form a sequence across the surface, turning the changing scale of the design into the central attraction. Large details give way to smaller versions of the same Winged Liberty motif. It is an intentional multi-strike art medal, created to show a classic design in an unusual arrangement.
The Story Behind “Mercury”
Adolph A. Weinman’s Winged Liberty dime was issued from 1916 through 1945. Its portrait represents Liberty wearing a winged cap to symbolize freedom of thought. The resemblance to the Roman messenger god led to the popular nickname “Mercury dime,” which has endured among collectors.
This medal draws on that well-known imagery and the 1916-D date-and-mint-mark combination. Those historical features belong to the tribute design; the piece is a modern silver art medal, not an original dime.
Design Details
Obverse: Repeated Winged Liberty portraits are accompanied by elements of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the 1916 date. The overlapping impressions make the relationship between the five die sizes visible.
Reverse: The Mercury Tribute design features fasces with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME and E PLURIBUS UNUM, together with a D mint-mark detail. The tribute’s silver hallmark is microprinted along the axe blade.
