The Story Behind the Design

The original dime was designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman and produced by the United States Mint from 1916 through 1945. Its portrait represents Liberty wearing a winged cap. The wings express freedom of thought, but their resemblance to the Roman god Mercury helped give the coin the nickname that has endured.

The design arrived during a remarkable year for American coinage. The Standing Liberty quarter and Walking Liberty half dollar also made their debuts in 1916; Weinman designed the half dollar as well as the dime. Together, these designs gave familiar circulating denominations a distinctive artistic identity.

On the dime’s reverse, a bundle of rods surrounding an axe—the ancient fasces—appears with an olive branch. In the original design, these elements paired preparedness and strength with a desire for peace. The two sides therefore tell a connected story: liberty of thought on the obverse, balanced by responsibility and peace on the reverse.

Obverse and Reverse

The obverse of this tribute features the Winged Liberty Head, surrounded by LIBERTY, with IN GOD WE TRUST below the portrait and the date 1916. The reverse carries the fasces, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, together with a D mint-mark tribute. Microprinting along the axe blade identifies the modern round as 1/10 Troy Ounce .999 AG.

The historical date and denomination are elements of the tribute artwork. This piece is a modern Intaglio Mint silver round, distinct from an original United States Mint dime. Its fractional weight offers another way to enjoy the design within a collection of silver tributes.
