King Kat – A Tabby Takes Manhattan
Every cat believes it rules the house. King Kat gives one ambitious tabby a considerably larger climbing frame: the Empire State Building. With biplanes circling its oversized feline star, this silver round turns a familiar monster-movie scene into a wonderfully improbable cat adventure.
Struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the 39mm round packs towering architecture, aerial action and feline confidence into a compact collectible. The joke is immediately recognizable, but the setting also carries a real place in New York history.
A Skyscraper with a Screen Career
The Empire State Building opened on May 1, 1931. Rising 102 stories above Manhattan, it became an emblem of the city’s ambition and remained the world’s tallest building for nearly forty years. Its Art Deco identity and distinctive silhouette made it a natural subject for photographers and filmmakers.
In 1933, King Kong placed the skyscraper at the center of one of cinema’s most famous monster encounters. King Kat playfully recalls that visual tradition through a different kind of climber. The giant tabby and circling biplanes turn cinematic peril into feline mischief: a city-sized version of a cat that has found the highest perch in the room.
Design Details
The obverse shows a giant tabby climbing the Empire State Building, encircled by biplanes. The contrast in scale supplies the drama, with an ordinary household animal transformed into the skyline’s dominant presence. The scene is a fantasy illustration, inviting enjoyment of the absurd rather than depicting a historical event.
The reverse features the high-relief Intaglio Mint logo on a radial burst, surrounded by a stippled border. ONE TROY OUNCE appears above, with .999 FINE SILVER below and the Roman-numeral year MMXXII, or 2022, completing the design.
