Join, or Die – 1 Troy Ounce Silver Bar
Eight pieces of a snake. Three words beneath them. Few early American images deliver their message with such economy. Our Join, or Die silver bar brings the famous call for colonial cooperation to 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, pairing the segmented serpent with Intaglio Mint’s logo on textured fields.
A Message First Printed in 1754
Benjamin Franklin published the Join, or Die woodcut in The Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754, at the beginning of the French and Indian War. Its original purpose was to encourage Britain’s American colonies to cooperate against France and its Native allies. The image therefore predates the American Revolution and began as an appeal for common defense.
The snake’s eight sections represented colonies or groups of colonies, with New England grouped together at the head. That detail explains why the familiar image has eight pieces rather than thirteen. The broken body makes the argument visually: separate parts lack the strength of a united whole. The Library of Congress identifies the print as a landmark of early American political cartooning.
Obverse Design
The Intaglio Mint logo sits above the hallmark on a textured background. This face provides the bar’s mint identity and silver-content information, with the surrounding texture giving the lettering and emblem a distinct setting.
Reverse Design
A snake divided into eight sections appears on a textured field, with “Join, or Die” below. The bar preserves the original image’s direct relationship between picture and phrase. Its appeal lies in that clarity: the fractured serpent tells the story, and the short inscription supplies the conclusion.
