A Gorgon with an Enduring Presence

In Hesiod’s account, Medusa was one of three Gorgon sisters, alongside Stheno and Euryale. Unlike her sisters, she was mortal. Her encounter with Perseus became one of the best-known episodes in Greek heroic tradition, and her snake-haired appearance offered artists an immediately recognizable subject.

Ancient viewers also understood the Gorgon’s face as a protective image. Its frightening power could symbolically turn danger away, which helps explain why Gorgon imagery appeared on armor, architectural decoration, and personal ornaments. A figure feared within the story could therefore serve a reassuring purpose when placed on an object.

Medusa’s appearance changed across centuries of art, from deliberately alarming faces to more human and reflective portrayals.
