The Goddess Behind the Design
In Greek tradition, Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. She is associated with hunting and wild animals, as well as chastity and childbirth. These roles make her more complex than a simple archer: she is connected both with the pursuit of animals and with the protection of life.
Ancient poetry gives her a similarly vivid character. The Homeric hymns describe her delight in archery and mountain hunting, but also in music and dance. Her bow and animal companions became recognizable attributes in art, allowing viewers to identify the goddess even without an inscription naming her.
Obverse Design
Artemis rides her stag with her bow drawn, a dog running beside her. The Parthenon appears on a distant hill as part of the composition’s Greek setting. The active pose and accompanying animals emphasize the huntress’s movement through the natural world.
Reverse Design
A domed architectural composition is framed by pillars and a base. “GREEK MYTHOLOGY” appears across the ceiling area, linking the piece to the series, while the lower circumference carries the silver hallmark. Its ordered architectural forms provide a contrast to the action on the obverse.
