Notre-Dame I – 1 AVDP Oz .999 Fine Copper Round | Gargoyles of the World Series
Celebrate the mystique of medieval architecture with the Notre-Dame copper round, the debut release in our Gargoyles of the World Series. Perched atop the famed Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, this iconic chimera gazes over the cityscape, a timeless guardian of Gothic heritage.
Struck in .999 fine copper, this 1 oz AVDP round measures 39mm and features a masterfully detailed rendering of the contemplative Notre-Dame gargoyle, its chin resting in its hands with the rooftops of Paris in the distance. The reverse presents the series’ signature design — an ornate gothic window motif framing the title Gargoyles of the World, centered beneath a vigilant winged gargoyle.
The Legend
Notre-Dame’s famous Stryge belongs to the decorative chimeras created during the cathedral’s nineteenth-century restoration under Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Unlike gargoyles, which channel rainwater away from the building, these fantastical figures serve as sculpture. The Stryge’s chin-in-hands pose became an enduring image of Paris, joining medieval inspiration with the imagination of the Gothic Revival.
An essential addition for collectors intrigued by the art, history, and legends of Gothic architecture.
