A Memorial in Stone

Henry H. Rogers financed and donated the church in 1904 in memory of his mother. Boston architects Brigham, Coveney and Bisbee designed it in a style inspired by fifteenth-century English Perpendicular Gothic architecture.

The building’s materials tell their own story. Locally quarried granite forms much of the exterior, contrasted with decorative Indiana limestone carvings. Inside, marble and limestone continue the emphasis on skilled stonework. The church credits forty-five Italian craftsmen brought to Fairhaven by Rogers with its stone artistry.

That combination of local material, international craftsmanship, and historic inspiration makes the church a fitting subject for this series. A single carved creature can reward close attention just as much as the larger tower or window that surrounds it.
