Bluebonnet – Texas Series 2 Troy Ounce Silver Round

Our “Don’t Mess with Texas” series showcases some of the iconic things that make Texas so special. The third release celebrates the bluebonnet, a flower whose springtime display has become part of the state’s identity. Struck in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, this round brings a familiar Texas symbol into a lasting metal tribute.

A State Flower with More Than One Variety

Texas adopted the bluebonnet as its state flower in 1901. The original designation named Lupinus subcarnosus, but the story did not end there. In 1971, the legislature broadened the designation to include Lupinus texensis and other varieties of bluebonnet. The state flower is therefore a shared honor, rather than a title belonging to just one species.

That botanical detail makes the bluebonnet an especially fitting subject for a Texas collection. A familiar name holds more variety than it first suggests, just as the state’s landscapes offer much more than a single view. This design celebrates the recognizable flower without limiting its tribute to a particular species.

Part of the Texas Roadside

The sweeping wildflower displays along Texas highways also reflect a long history of care. In 1932, the Texas Highway Department hired its first landscape architect, Jac Gubbels, to help preserve and encourage native roadside plants. Wildflower management became part of the road system’s identity, linking everyday travel with the changing seasons. The bluebonnet round draws on that connection between a small blossom and a much larger sense of place.

Design Details

Obverse: A bluebonnet, the state flower of Texas, is the featured subject.

Reverse: The common Texas series reverse centers a longhorn skull with a star on its forehead. An oak branch appears to the right and an olive branch to the left. “DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS” follows the lower circumference, with the hallmark at 6 o’clock.
