Texas Longhorn 1 oz Silver Round
Wide horns, open country, and a place in Texas history.
Our “Don’t Mess with Texas” series showcases some of the iconic things that make Texas so special. The second release honors the Texas Longhorn, a breed whose unmistakable silhouette recalls the ranches and cattle trails of the Lone Star State. This 39mm round contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and features a longhorn standing on the prairie.
From Open Range to Texas Emblem
The longhorn’s story reaches back to cattle brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers and settlers. Animals that escaped or ranged freely adapted to conditions in what became the American Southwest. Their descendants helped shape the cattle culture for which Texas is known.
After the Civil War, cattle offered Texas an important source of income. Longhorns were driven toward northern markets along routes such as the Chisholm and Western trails. Their ability to travel great distances and forage in difficult country made them well suited to the demanding journey.
Later crossbreeding and changing ranching preferences reduced the numbers of traditional longhorns. Preservation efforts kept that heritage alive; the official state herd is based at Fort Griffin. Texas recognized the longhorn as its official large mammal in 1995, giving formal status to an animal already woven into the state’s identity.
