Bluebonnet 1 oz Silver Round
A Texas springtime emblem, preserved in fine silver.
Our “Don’t Mess with Texas” series showcases some of the iconic things that make Texas so special. Its third release celebrates the bluebonnet, the state flower and a familiar symbol of spring across the Lone Star State. One troy ounce of .999 fine silver pairs the flower with the series’ distinctive longhorn-skull reverse.
The Story of the State Flower
Texas first adopted the bluebonnet as its official flower in 1901, at the request of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Texas. The original designation named Lupinus subcarnosus, one of the plants known by the bluebonnet name.
The story did not end with a single species. In 1971, the Legislature broadened the designation to include Lupinus texensis and other bluebonnet varieties. That history makes the state flower an unusually inclusive emblem: a shared name and place in Texas culture, rather than a title confined to just one botanical species.
For many Texans, bluebonnets recall country roads, spring outings and familiar landscapes. On this round, the floral subject offers a gentler companion to the armadillo and longhorn designs that opened the series, while remaining unmistakably Texan.
