The Shepherd and the Champion

In 1 Samuel 17, the Philistine champion Goliath challenges the Israelites while the opposing armies face one another across a valley. David, a young shepherd, volunteers to confront him despite the enormous difference in their apparent strength.

David tries Saul’s armor but removes it because he is unaccustomed to wearing it. Instead, he takes his staff, sling, and five smooth stones. His confidence rests in God rather than in the equipment or stature of a conventional warrior.

A stone from David’s sling strikes Goliath, bringing him down. David then takes the fallen champion’s own sword. The round presents the outcome of that encounter: the youth standing over the defeated giant.
