Clark, Gruber & Co. Pike’s Peak Gold Tribute – One Troy Ounce .9999 Fine Gold
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Few names are more important to the history of Western American coinage than Clark, Gruber & Co. During the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of the late 1850s and early 1860s, thousands of prospectors poured into the Colorado Territory in search of fortune. As gold production increased, the need for reliable coinage became critical. Transporting gold dust and bullion to distant federal mints was expensive, time-consuming, and often dangerous.
In response, Austin Clark, Milton Clark, and Emanuel Gruber established Clark, Gruber & Co. in Denver and opened a private mint in July 1860. Their gold coinage quickly gained acceptance throughout the territory, providing miners and merchants with a trusted medium of exchange struck from locally sourced Rocky Mountain gold.
Among their most famous issues were the Pike’s Peak Gold coins, featuring a depiction of the mountain that had become synonymous with Colorado’s gold rush. The company’s success was so significant that in 1863 the United States Treasury purchased the mint and converted it into a federal assay office, creating the foundation that would eventually become the Denver Mint.
Today, original Clark, Gruber & Co. gold coins are among the most coveted pieces of American territorial coinage, prized for both their rarity and historical importance. This tribute faithfully recreates the classic mountain and eagle motifs of the historic issue, honoring the pioneering spirit that helped shape the American West.
Struck in-house by Intaglio Mint from 1 Troy Ounce of .9999 Fine Gold, this tribute honors the original metal that made Clark, Gruber & Co. famous and pays homage to one of the most important private minting operations in American history.
