Battle Los Angeles – 1 Troy Ounce .999 Fine Silver Round

In the early hours of February 25, 1942, air-raid alarms and a blackout brought Los Angeles into a night of wartime uncertainty. Searchlights swept the sky and antiaircraft batteries opened fire at reported targets, but no enemy aircraft were confirmed. Shell fragments damaged property on the ground. The Army Air Forces’ official history later identified meteorological balloons as a plausible trigger, with smoke and shell bursts adding to the confusion. The spectacle became known as the “Battle of Los Angeles” and later inspired UFO theories, although those theories do not establish an extraterrestrial visit. This round captures the drama and enduring mystery that made the event part of Los Angeles lore.

We designed the artwork in-house based on news articles that documented the event, then sent over the digital renderings to our friends over at Intaglio Mint for die cutting and the final striking of each round. We really enjoyed bringing a piece of L.A. history to life on a silver round.
