Bass Reeves – 2 Troy Ounces .999 Fine Silver Round
Salute a remarkable frontier lawman with Bass Reeves from the Wild West Legends Series. His formal portrait gives this two-ounce silver round a dignified presence, pairing a substantial 39mm format with a story of persistence, resourcefulness, and public service.
Thirty-Two Years Behind the Badge
Born into slavery, Bass Reeves became a deputy U.S. marshal in 1875 and served until Oklahoma statehood in 1907. His work took him across Indian Territory, where deputies operating from the federal court at Fort Smith pursued people accused of federal crimes. His career spanned an extraordinary thirty-two years of change in the region.
Reeves earned a reputation for patient detective work as well as marksmanship. The National Park Service records his use of disguises to gather information and apprehend fugitives. In a 1901 newspaper interview, Reeves himself reported more than 3,000 arrests—a striking measure of the career behind the familiar legend.
After leaving federal service, he continued working as a police officer in Muskogee. His story adds an essential African American perspective to Western history: a formerly enslaved man exercising federal authority during an era when racial discrimination restricted so many other aspects of life.
Obverse Design
The obverse features Reeves in a coat and bow tie. The portrait’s formal presentation suits the subject, directing attention toward the person behind the badge rather than staging an imagined gunfight. The thick silver format gives the design a substantial setting.
Reverse Design
A longhorn skull, crossed rifles, and decorative frontier elements form the Wild West Legends reverse. The recurring design connects Reeves with the broader series while his portrait and history distinguish this individual tribute.
