A Classic from the Turn of the Century
Designed by Charles E. Barber, the Liberty Head half dollar was issued from 1892 through 1915. It followed the long-running Seated Liberty half dollar and preceded Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, introduced in 1916. That places the Barber half between two very different visions of Liberty: the seated figure of the nineteenth century and the energetic, full-length figure that followed.
This tribute draws attention to the details that make Barber’s portrait distinctive: the cap, the laurel wreath and the small band bearing LIBERTY. The illustrated round carries the date 1898 as part of its historical design. It is a modern silver round inspired by the half dollar, rather than an original nineteenth-century circulating coin.
Obverse: Liberty in Profile
Liberty faces right beneath a Phrygian cap and a wreath of laurel. LIBERTY appears above her forehead, with IN GOD WE TRUST overhead. Six stars at the left and seven at the right frame the portrait, and the date rests below. The arrangement gives the design its balanced, medallic appearance.
Reverse: The Heraldic Eagle
An eagle adapted from the Great Seal of the United States spreads its wings behind a shield. It holds an olive branch and arrows, with a ribbon inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak and stars above. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the upper rim, while TWO TROY OZ. identifies the tribute’s silver weight below.
