A Life Linked to the Matchless Mine
Known as “Baby Doe,” Elizabeth was the wife of Colorado silver magnate Horace Tabor. Their wealth and lavish way of life became part of the state’s mining-era legend. The silver collapse of 1893 devastated that fortune, turning a story of extraordinary prosperity into one of loss and endurance.
The Matchless Mine near Leadville became the place most closely associated with her later years. History Colorado recognizes the mine for both its industrial importance and its connection with the Tabors, including Elizabeth’s association with the property from 1901 to 1935. Photographs preserved by the institution show her outside the small cabin near the mine.
She died there in 1935, long after the years of society glamour. Her life is often retold as a romance or a tragedy, but its setting also reveals the uncertain foundations of a mining fortune. Silver shaped the Tabors’ opportunities and reversals; here it becomes the medium for remembering the person behind the famous nickname.
