The Story Behind the Character

George Orwell wrote Animal Farm: A Fairy Story in 1943–1944; it was published in 1945. The animals of Manor Farm overthrow Mr. Jones hoping to control their own lives and share the rewards of their labor. As the pigs consolidate authority, the distance between the revolution’s promises and everyday life steadily grows.

Squealer serves as Napoleon’s communicator and propagandist. His task is to make the leadership’s decisions acceptable to the other animals, even when those decisions bring the pigs more privilege and everyone else more work. He can turn a troubling question into a warning about the return of Mr. Jones, shifting attention from present injustice to a feared past.

When Language Serves Power

Where Boxer contributes strength and labor, Squealer contributes persuasion. His confidence gives official explanations the appearance of certainty, while the animals’ uncertainty makes their own memories easier to dismiss. The character shows how domination can depend on stories and reassurances as much as commands.
