Boxer – The Strength and Heart of Animal Farm

Boxer answers every difficulty with another day’s work. Strong, loyal and tragically trusting, George Orwell’s cart-horse is one of the most memorable figures in Animal Farm. Intaglio Mint places him at the center of this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round, pairing a formal character portrait with the farm whose promises demand so much from him.

The Story Behind the Character

Written in 1943–1944 and published in 1945, Animal Farm: A Fairy Story follows the animals of Manor Farm as they overthrow Mr. Jones and attempt to create a fairer society. Orwell draws on the Russian Revolution and its aftermath, tracing the distance between revolutionary ideals and the privileges claimed by a new ruling class.

Boxer’s labor makes that experiment possible. He helps defend the farm at the Battle of the Cowshed and becomes indispensable to the construction of the windmill. His remorse when he believes he has killed a stable-boy reveals a gentleness that contrasts with his immense physical power. For Boxer, strength is something to put to work for others.

Loyalty Put to the Test

His familiar resolve, “I will work harder,” is both admirable and heartbreaking. Boxer responds to hardship by demanding more of himself, while his trust in Napoleon keeps him from recognizing how that devotion is being exploited. Even after collapsing, he worries about the unfinished windmill and imagines a peaceful retirement with Benjamin.

The betrayal that follows gives his story its lasting force. Boxer’s fate turns the farm’s grand promises into a personal tragedy, making him a powerful literary reminder of the difference between loyalty freely given and loyalty cynically used.

Obverse Design

A formally dressed portrait presents Boxer as an individual worthy of attention, with “BOXER” placed to the right just below the center of the composition.

Reverse Design

A barn, silo and windmill form the farm silhouette. The weathervane bears “MANOR FARM,” with “ANIMALISM” centered beneath and the hallmark along the lower circumference.
