UFOs Over Sydney – An Unexpected Harbour Performance
The Sydney Opera House is used to drawing an audience. In this scene, some of its visitors have arrived from a very different direction. Flying saucers hover above the famous roof shells and waterfront in Intaglio Mint’s UFOs Over Sydney, a 2 troy ounce .999 fine silver round from the UFO Sightings & Alien Abduction Series.
The Landmark Beneath the Saucers
Danish architect Jørn Utzon won the international competition for the Opera House design in 1957. The building opened in 1973, becoming one of Australia’s most recognizable landmarks. Its extraordinary roof required an equally inventive solution: the curves of the shells were developed from the geometry of a sphere, allowing a complex sculptural idea to become a buildable structure.
That architectural drama makes an ideal setting for an imagined encounter. The sweeping roof forms and disc-shaped craft create two very different kinds of curves, one grounded beside the harbour and the other suspended overhead. This is a fictional scene intended for the series, rather than a claim of an actual UFO event.
Obverse Design
The Opera House dominates the waterfront, with textured water in the foreground and the city behind it. Several saucers cross the open sky. The composition leaves space around the aircraft while concentrating fine detail in the roof shells, shoreline and distant buildings.
Reverse Design
A large Intaglio Mint logo appears within a plain border. “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER” surround the emblem, with the year 2023 flanking the central design.
