UNESCO recognized the city’s Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea in 2012, including Corcovado, Tijuca National Park and the dramatic setting around Guanabara Bay. Nature and the built city are part of the same view.
The statue of Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated on Corcovado on October 12, 1931. Its open-armed silhouette provides an immediate point of recognition in this imagined encounter.
