The Sign Behind the Scene
The Hollywood Sign began with a purpose far removed from movie mythology. Erected in 1923, it originally read “HOLLYWOODLAND” and advertised a real estate development. What was meant as a temporary promotion became a symbol recognized far beyond the neighborhood it was built to sell.
In 1949, the final four letters were removed and the sign took on the shorter name familiar today. Its survival required later efforts as well: the deteriorating structure was rebuilt in 1978 following a fundraising campaign supported by celebrity sponsors. The landmark’s own history has something of a Hollywood storyline—an unlikely debut, difficult years and a dramatic comeback.
A Different Kind of Premiere
The round gives that real landmark an imaginary new chapter. Saucer-shaped craft fill the open sky above the hillside letters, while palm trees and ridgelines establish the Southern California setting below. Reverse: The high-relief Intaglio Mint logo rests on a radial burst within a stippled border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” appears above, with “.999 FINE SILVER” and the year “2023” completing the design.
