Toucan – A Tropical Portrait in Fine Silver
A toucan’s unmistakable profile takes center stage on this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round from Intaglio Mint. The high-relief head rises against a jungle scene and volcano, translating a bird famous for color into a composition of sculpted form, texture and light. The bold bill gives the design an instantly recognizable silhouette.
A Remarkable Bill with a Practical Purpose
The toucan’s oversized bill looks heavy, but its construction is surprisingly light. A network of internal supports provides strength without the weight of solid bone, while an outer layer of keratin—the material also found in human fingernails—forms its surface. That combination helps the bird reach fruit from slender branches.
Fruit is an important part of a toucan’s diet, but these birds also take insects and other small animal foods. Their bills are useful tools for reaching and handling food, not simply colorful ornaments. Toucans nest in tree cavities, making the trunks as well as the fruiting branches of their habitat important to their lives.
Their voices can be just as surprising as their appearance. Depending on the kind of toucan, calls may sound like croaks, barks or growls rather than the melodious song a viewer might expect. Those details make the familiar tropical silhouette part of a much richer natural story.
Jungle Scenery in High Relief
The obverse places the high-relief toucan head over a jungle landscape with a volcano and the word “TOUCAN.” The foreground portrait and distant scenery create contrasting layers, giving the eye more to explore than a simple bird outline.
The reverse features the high-relief Intaglio Mint logo on a radial burst, surrounded by a stippled border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” and “.999 FINE SILVER” identify the silver content, with stars completing the design.
