The Man Behind the Monster
Universal’s The Wolf Man arrived in 1941, directed and produced by George Waggner from a screenplay by Curt Siodmak. Lon Chaney Jr. played Lawrence “Larry” Talbot, with Claude Rains as his father, Sir John. Bela Lugosi and Maria Ouspenskaya also appeared in the cast, linking the film with other memorable faces of classic horror.
Talbot returns to his family home in Wales and becomes entangled in a frightening chain of events after a wolf attack. A silver-headed walking stick, a warning about the werewolf’s curse and his growing fear of his own actions give the story its sense of inevitability. The central tension is not simply whether a monster will be stopped, but whether a decent man can escape what he has become.
Werewolves had reached the screen before, including Universal’s Werewolf of London in 1935. The 1941 film nevertheless gave the subject an especially memorable tragic figure. Its mixture of human vulnerability and frightening transformation remains central to the Wolfman’s appeal.
