The Mothman 1 oz Silver Round
Broad wings rise against electrical towers in Intaglio Mint’s portrayal of the Mothman, a creature whose legend grew in the industrial outskirts of a West Virginia river town. This 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round captures the uneasy mixture of familiar surroundings and an unexplained presence that made the story memorable.
From Point Pleasant to Popular Culture
Reports of a large winged figure with glowing red eyes gathered attention around Point Pleasant in November 1966. The West Virginia Encyclopedia places many of the accounts near an abandoned wartime munitions facility known locally as the TNT plant. Suggested explanations included a stray sandhill crane, while stories of other strange events accumulated around the sightings.
Writer John Keel brought the accounts to a wider audience in The Mothman Prophecies, published in 1975 and later adapted into a 2002 film. His narrative associated the legend with the December 1967 Silver Bridge disaster. The bridge collapse itself had an engineering explanation: investigators identified a fracture in a suspension-chain eyebar. Its connection to Mothman belongs to the folklore, not the established cause of the tragedy.
In 2003, a Mothman sculpture was installed in downtown Point Pleasant. The figure’s journey from unsettling report to public monument shows how a local mystery became a recognizable part of the town’s cultural identity.
Design Details
Obverse: The Mothman displays its large wings before high-tension electrical wire towers. The industrial background distinguishes this scene from woodland cryptid designs and gives the creature an imposing presence within a recognizable human landscape.
Reverse: The high-relief Intaglio Mint logo appears on a radial burst within a stippled border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” and “.999 FINE SILVER” identify the silver content, flanked by stars.
The 39 mm round has a reeded edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish. Its dramatic composition offers collectors a silver interpretation of one of Appalachia’s best-known modern legends.
