Swamp Creature 2 oz Silver Round – Vintage Horror Series

Something stirs beneath the still water. Intaglio Mint’s Swamp Creature round brings the atmosphere of classic aquatic horror to two troy ounces of .999 fine silver, pairing a creature in its natural habitat with the movie-reel reverse of the Vintage Horror Series.

From the Lagoon to the Silver Screen

The subject recalls the amphibious Gill Man introduced in Creature from the Black Lagoon in 1954. Directed by Jack Arnold for Universal-International, the film followed an expedition into an isolated lagoon where scientific curiosity brought people face to face with an unknown creature.

The production was filmed in black-and-white 3-D, giving its underwater encounters an added sense of depth. Florida’s Wakulla waters provided a setting for underwater filming. Bringing the monster to life required different performers: Ben Chapman played the Gill Man on land, while swimmer Ricou Browning performed the underwater scenes.

Its success led to Revenge of the Creature in 1955 and The Creature Walks Among Us in 1956. The image of an amphibious figure emerging from dark water became a distinctive part of classic monster cinema, combining the mystery of an unexplored habitat with the unsettling possibility that its inhabitant might be watching from below.

Design Details

The round places the creature within its own environment, allowing the setting to contribute to the scene rather than presenting an isolated monster portrait. On the opposite side, the film-reel motif connects the piece to the wider Vintage Horror Series and its celebration of screen monsters.

• Obverse: A detailed depiction of the Swamp Creature in its natural habitat.
• Reverse: “VINTAGE” appears above on an old movie reel, with “HORROR” across the center and the hallmark along the bottom.
