Skiing Santa – Christmas Takes to the Slopes

Santa trades his usual ride for a pair of skis on this cheerful holiday round from Intaglio Mint. Skiing Santa brings a playful winter-sports twist to a familiar Christmas character in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. It is a seasonal design with particular appeal for anyone who associates the holidays with snow and time outdoors.

How Santa Became So Familiar

The Santa recognized today developed through many stories and images. The Library of Congress traces the figure to several European traditions, including Saint Nicholas, and explains how the Dutch name Sinterklaas became Santa Claus in American usage.

Nineteenth-century print helped give the character a widely shared appearance. The poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, first published in 1823 and often called ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, became an influential part of that tradition. Artist Thomas Nast also helped shape Santa’s visual identity through illustrations, including his 1863 Santa Claus in Camp for Harper’s Weekly.

That long history of reinterpretation makes room for a lighter sporting variation. Santa remains recognizable even when an artist places him in an unexpected activity, and the skiing pose gives this round its particular sense of fun.

A Holiday Character in Motion

The obverse depicts Santa Claus skiing. The scene turns the familiar gift-bringer into an active participant in winter recreation, offering a compact holiday image that can recall a ski trip, a snowy Christmas or a family’s seasonal traditions.

The reverse carries the large Intaglio Mint logo within a plain border. “TWO TROY OUNCES” appears above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below, flanked by stars. The straightforward reverse balances the playful seasonal subject with a clear statement of the round’s silver content.
