Our Lady of Guadalupe – A Devotional Image in Silver

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a deeply familiar image of Mary in Catholic devotion, especially in Mexico. Intaglio Mint honors that tradition with this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round, placing a depiction of Our Lady on the obverse and the mint’s logo on the reverse.

The Tradition of Tepeyac

According to Catholic tradition, Mary appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in December 1531, near what is now Mexico City. The Vatican’s biography of Juan Diego recounts his encounters and the request that he carry a message to the bishop.

The best-known part of the account centers on flowers and a tilma, the cloak Juan Diego wore. On December 12, he gathered flowers and carried them to the bishop. In the traditional narrative, when he opened the cloak, the flowers fell and an image of Mary appeared on its fabric. That image became the focus of the devotion associated with Guadalupe.

December 12 remains the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The image and its story connect a particular place and person with themes of maternal care, reassurance and faith. For devotees, the familiar title Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe carries a meaning that reaches well beyond the appearance of the image alone.

A Revered Subject, a Lasting Medium

The obverse depicts Our Lady of Guadalupe, making the devotional subject the central focus. Rendering the image in silver gives its contours and relief a different character from a painted or printed representation, with changing light drawing attention to the sculpted form.

The reverse carries the large Intaglio Mint logo within a plain border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” appears above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below, flanked by stars. The round brings together religious imagery and clearly identified silver content in a 39 mm format.
