2022 Niue Thor – The Thunder God in Motion
Thor rides into the design of this 2022 Niue two-dollar coin with his hammer in hand and a horned team drawing his chariot. Struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the coin gives a familiar Norse mythological figure an active setting within a 39 mm format. Decorative knotwork frames the scene and echoes the border on the issuing side.
The Hammer and the Chariot
The Prose Edda describes Thor as exceptionally strong and gives him three important possessions: the hammer Mjölnir, a belt that increases his strength and iron gloves used when handling the hammer. His vehicle is drawn by two goats, named Tanngnjóstr and Tanngrisnir in modern spellings. These details make the chariot and hammer recognizable parts of Thor’s traditional identity.
The pairing is especially effective in a visual design. The chariot suggests travel and momentum, while the raised weapon establishes the power of its rider. Rather than presenting only an isolated emblem, the coin brings several features of the old stories together in one scene. The subject is a modern artistic interpretation of mythology.
Design Details
The reverse depicts Thor wielding his hammer while riding a chariot drawn by two horned animals, with a Celtic knot pattern around the outer circumference. The composition draws attention to the movement of the team and the figure above it.
The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy with “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “TWO DOLLARS” and the date 2022 surrounding it. A Celtic knot border connects the two sides stylistically. The issue has a stated worldwide mintage of 2,500, with the original certificate available through the link below.
