2022 Niue Molon Labe Type I – An Ancient Reply in Silver
This 2022 Niue two-dollar coin celebrates the fourth anniversary of Intaglio Mint’s first Molon Labe design. Struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, it pairs a dramatic Spartan scene with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The Type I issue has medallic die alignment and a stated worldwide mintage of 1,500.
The Words Behind the Design
Commonly translated as “come and take them,” Molon Labe is traditionally attributed to the Spartan king Leonidas in response to a demand to surrender his weapons. In Sayings of Spartans, Plutarch recounts an exchange in which Xerxes orders Leonidas to hand over his arms and receives that short reply. The attribution belongs to the ancient literary tradition; it should be understood as a reported saying, rather than a surviving transcript of the exchange.
The appeal of the phrase lies in its brevity. A demand and a refusal become an entire story in only a few words. On this coin, the spear, shield and battle scene give that verbal encounter a visual setting, connecting the inscription with the warrior who carries it.
Portrait and Spartan Scene
The obverse bears Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy, surrounded by “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “TWO DOLLARS” and the date 2022. A Spartan shield forms the outer design, linking the issuing side to the historical theme.
The reverse depicts a soldier in Spartan regalia holding a spear and shield, with a battle scene behind him. “MOLON LABE” appears at the spear’s point. This combination of a denominated Niue obverse and Intaglio Mint’s established imagery distinguishes the anniversary coin within the wider series. Collectors comparing issues should note the Type I medallic die alignment specified for this listing.
