Loch Ness Monster 1 oz Silver Round

A long neck breaking the surface hints at only part of the mystery beneath. Intaglio Mint’s Loch Ness Monster round reveals both sides of that imagined encounter, showing Nessie above and below the water in a detailed, high-relief composition. The 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver format gives this famous Scottish legend a substantial collectible form.

The Making of a Modern Legend

Loch Ness, in the Scottish Highlands, became the focus of worldwide attention in 1933. A report in the Inverness Courier helped turn a local account of a large creature in the water into an enduring public fascination. National Museums Scotland has highlighted that newspaper story as a turning point in the monster’s fame.

Among the accounts associated with that year was hotel manager Aldie Mackay’s report of a water beast. The former Drumnadrochit Hotel later became the location of the Loch Ness Centre, linking the modern visitor attraction to the story that helped launch Nessie’s celebrity.

Since then, alleged sightings, disputed images and repeated searches have kept the legend alive. The familiar long-necked silhouette belongs to that evolving folklore, rather than to a scientifically established animal. This design embraces the imaginative question at the heart of the story: what might be concealed beneath an otherwise ordinary stretch of water?

Design Details

Obverse: A detailed, high-relief Loch Ness Monster appears in a split view above and below the surface. Showing the submerged creature alongside its visible portion gives the scene a narrative quality and lets the viewer see more than a distant observer on shore could.

Reverse: The high-relief Intaglio Mint logo rests on a radial burst within a stippled border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” and “.999 FINE SILVER” identify the silver content, with stars completing the design.

The round measures 39 mm across and has a reeded edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish. It brings an aquatic counterpart to a collection of forest creatures, winged legends and other subjects from cryptid lore.
