Library of Congress records describe how Douglas and Ralph Herrick popularized the American jackalope in the 1930s by attaching antlers to a jackrabbit carcass and selling the creation to a hotel in Douglas, Wyoming.

Douglas embraced the improbable animal as a local character. The city’s own account credits the Herrick brothers with helping spread its fame, and jackalope imagery became a playful expression of Western identity. The mounted creature offered just enough familiar detail to invite a second look—and just enough absurdity to launch another story.
