The Emotion Behind the Mask
In Noh theater, the Hannya mask represents a woman transformed by jealousy into a demonic figure. Its horns, glaring eyes and open mouth give anger a visible form, but the character also carries suffering. A traditional mask can appear furious when viewed straight on and sorrowful when tilted downward. The performer’s movement brings those contrasting emotions into the same carved face.
That expressive use of a fixed mask belongs to a much wider theatrical tradition. UNESCO describes Nōgaku as encompassing both Noh and Kyōgen, with a flourishing period in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Noh combines stylized performance, music and masks, often drawing its stories from traditional literature and encounters with the supernatural. A mask is therefore more than a costume accessory: it helps establish the character the audience is being asked to see.
