From Mary Shelley’s Novel to a Screen Icon

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus first appeared in 1818. Its story began during the cold, rainy summer of 1816 near Geneva, when ghost stories prompted a challenge to invent new supernatural tales. The resulting novel explored creation, ambition and the responsibility owed to a living being brought into the world.

Frankenstein is the name of the creator, Victor, rather than a personal name given to his creature. In the novel, the being is capable of speech, thought and powerful emotion. His desire for companionship and his rejection by others give the story a tragic dimension beyond the frightening circumstances of his creation.

The character gained a defining screen interpretation in Universal’s 1931 Frankenstein, directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff as the monster. The film helped establish an image that would become central to classic horror. This round belongs to that theatrical tradition, using the figure’s damaged clothing and visible scars to suggest both menace and suffering.
