From Stoker’s Pages to the Screen
Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published in 1897. Rather than relying on a single narrator, the novel assembles journals, letters, newspaper reports and other records into an unfolding mystery. Jonathan Harker’s journey to Transylvania begins the story, but the danger soon reaches England and draws several characters into a shared effort to understand and confront the count.
That documentary structure gives the fantastic events an unusual texture: readers piece together evidence alongside the people recording it. Diaries and even a phonograph record become tools in the struggle against an ancient threat, bringing contemporary Victorian methods into contact with supernatural tradition.
The character found an enduring screen presence in Universal’s 1931 Dracula, directed by Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi. The round’s formal clothing, cape and deliberate gesture evoke the theatrical vampire tradition, where courtesy and menace can occupy the same moment.
Design Details
The candle and beckoning hand give the portrait a sense of invitation, while the high collar frames the vampire’s face. The movie-reel reverse connects this literary and cinematic subject to the other classic monsters represented in the Vintage Horror Series.
