$20 Saint-Gaudens Tribute – 2 oz High Relief Gold
Liberty strides forward with a raised torch as an eagle crosses a field of sunbeams. This high-relief tribute presents the celebrated Saint-Gaudens double eagle imagery in 2 troy ounces of .9999 fine gold, with a 39 mm diameter and a Brilliant Uncirculated finish.
Sculpture Meets the Coining Press
President Theodore Roosevelt’s work with Augustus Saint-Gaudens brought a new sculptural ambition to American gold coinage. The double eagle design emerged in 1907, but translating its depth into coins suitable for large-scale production required repeated experimentation.
Saint-Gaudens’s assistant Henry Hering later described preparing models at different relief levels and testing how they struck. The eventual circulating design used lower relief, balancing the artist’s forms with the demands of the coining press. That tension between sculpture and production remains central to the story of the double eagle—and makes a modern high-relief interpretation particularly fitting.
Obverse Design
Liberty advances toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Long rays fan upward behind her, the U.S. Capitol appears at the lower left, and stars circle the border beneath the word “LIBERTY.” Flowing drapery and the forward step give the portrait its sense of energy.
Reverse Design
A left-facing eagle flies above a rising sun, with rays spreading across the field. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” follows the upper rim and “TWO TROY OUNCES” appears below it. The $20 reference in the product name identifies the historic design inspiration; the inscription on this modern tribute states its gold weight.
