A New Dollar for a New Era

Anthony de Francisci’s Peace Dollar arrived in December 1921, replacing the Morgan Dollar after its final year of original production. The change reflected the period following the First World War: the new design recognized sacrifice and expressed the hope of a return to peace.

The first issue was struck in high relief. That sculptural ambition created practical difficulties, including shortened die life and problems bringing up the detail in a single strike. The 1921 coin consequently holds a distinctive place in the series, linking an ambitious artistic design with the demands of mass coin production.

Its imagery carries the message clearly. Liberty’s spiked crown gives the portrait a radiant outline, while the eagle and branch on the reverse offer a quieter composition than an eagle shown in flight. The word “PEACE” makes the theme explicit.
